OOOOH... I couldn`t believe my eyes and ears after I saw this popping up on google o_O You did such a fantastic job man, I feel so flattered beyond words. Cannot express my amazement any more :D! Also, I never expected this to be actually played on guitar by anyone, so I made the riff all chaotic and hard to play on purpose. Hope you did not hurt your fingers there too much. :D

Rise Of The Mater Toast (Anyways good song)

Probably the quickest and easiest thing to make with wool is wool dryer balls. These solid wool balls are kept in the dryer to help tumble your laundry, softening the clothes and cutting down on your drying time. You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to add scent to your laundry too. Dryer sheets are full of harmful VOCs and you’ll be doing yourself a favor, both in health and on your wallet, when you ditch them for these sustainable, good for the planet alternatives!

It doesn’t matter what kind of wool you use (though I personally have struggled to felt alpaca) and really there are a lot of methods to do these. I have even seen some people snag cheap wool yarn from thrift store grab bags to make their balls with. Personally, if I find cheap wool yarn at the thrift store I am crochetting myself something special! To me, the best dryer balls are made with wool seconds. Seconds are those bits of wool that aren’t the best for spinning. Maybe they are already partially felted or have second cuttings.

Rise Of The Wool Ball

Our lovely Icelandic sheep need shearing twice a year and the spring clip is often already a bit felted due to the natural wool rise that is typical of the breed. This spring fleece, often discarded, makes for some really great dryer balls. In fact this spring that is exactly what I did with about 6 sheep worth of wool! You may be starting your balls with already washed and carded wool batts or roving but you can just as easily start with raw wool.

I went totally basic for this batch of balls. I made them right out of my wash bucket! I put my raw, fresh from the sheep, wool into a big bucket and carefully added hot water and a bit of dish soap. Soak it til the water is cool, drain the water carefully, and repeat minus the soap. Do this as many times as needed until your water is clear. Since you are already planning on felting this wool you don’t have to be perfectly careful about accidentally felting it but you don’t want to agitate your wet wool much or you may end up with one huge ball rather than several small ones! If you are starting with prepared wool you’ll need to wet it, add a wee bit of dish soap to help it felt together too. It is pretty simple from here. You are going to start very very small. Grab a bit of wool and try to form a ball. Make it as tight as you can. Rub it around in your hands like if you were making a play dough ball. When it is decently formed and tight and solid, add another layer of wool. Rub it all around vigorously. Add more water as needed and just keep adding layer upon layer making sure to keep it tight. That is probably the hardest part. When doing this project with kids they will often get ahead of themselves and not make their balls tight enough and their layers will start to come apart.

The

Making Wool Balls

It’s ok if your ball isn’t absolutely perfectly felted just yet but if you are satisfied with the size and overall shape and density then shove it into a length of pantyhose. Make a knot to hold you ball tight into the hose and get to making the next ball. And the next. And next. By now your hands will be prunes and maybe you will be totally over this whole process. Depending on your ball size and your hose size you may fit more or less than I did in my length.

Now the super easy part: let your washing machine do the final felting! Toss your knotted pantyhose balls into the washing machine with your regular laundry soap on a heavy duty, hot, high spin setting. Then toss then into the dryer as is and let the dryer further tumble, heat, and felt your balls. When the dryer is done, take them out and carefully cut your pantyhose off the balls. You’re done! Add some oils if you like, or don’t. Give a few to some friends, toss the rest into the dryer. A few balls might have some fly-aways where the knots for the hose were, you can usually just smooth these down with some wetness and agitation with your hand, or needle felt them down. You can even add some cute designs by adding some needle felted bits. I have seen some people get quite creative with them.
